Ormskirk occurs as little market town in England, situated on the Lancashire plain, just Xiii miles northward of Liverpool and 18 miles south of Preston.
History
A town was founded after Vikings, led by Orme, settled in the area. These are believed that Orme was, or even late became, the Christian as he built a church, giving a town its title: Orme's Kirk.
A Parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Ormskirk is situated on the places of the original Kirk & is the oldest building in the town. These are one of just deuce-ace churches around Engl& to have a tower & a steeple, and is unique in this it has two at the equivalent prevent of the building.
Within 1286 monks at nearby Burscough Priory were granted a Royal Charter by Edward I of England to hold a hebdomadally outdoor market, now the market is held twice hebdomadally in Thursday & Saturday.
Transport
A A59 is the main road, by using Preston to the north, & Liverpool to the south. A town is the northern terminus of Merseyrail, the line continues across to Preston. This line was originally opened inside 1846 as the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway which was bought by East Lancashire Railway.
A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway built the Skelmersdale Branch line to Skelmersdale and Rainford which opened on 1 March 1858. Passanger services ended 5 November 1956, goods to Rainford finished on 16 November 1961 and Skelmersdale on 4 November 1963.
